Wearing a tie can be done one of two ways: you can do it right and look good doing it, or you can do it all wrong. Here are some easy tips so you’re always wearing your tie like a pro.
Do learn how to tie a tie. There is no excuse for this one, if you are a grown man, you should know how to tie your tie. Pick one knot to learn if you must; the half Windsor is easy to learn and can be worn at almost any occasion.
Do undo your tie after each wear. Undoing your tie will increase the lifespan of your tie by reducing wear and eliminating wrinkles.
Do store your tie neatly. This may seem like a pain, but storing it properly by wrapping your tie in a loose loop or hanging it on a tie rack will keep your ties looking fresh at all times.
Don’t wear a tie with tie stains or frays. This should be a given, if your tie is past its expiration DO NOT wear it. You’re downgrading your look when you should be at your best.
Don’t wash or iron your ties. Dry cleaning can sometimes work, but never wash or iron your own ties. It will wear them out quickly or can even ruin your tie on the first wash.
Do choose a quality material for your tie. Silk is a great choice for a tie, and the more water-resistant your tie is, the easier it is to avoid stains.
Do Use Comparisons. A tie should complement your current suit and dress shirts. If you want one tie to work for many outfits, find shirts in the store that are similar to the shirts you own. Grab 3 or 4 and find a tie that works with all of the shirts to get the most versatility.
Do Match Your Accessories. A Suit as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. While a tie knot grabs the most attention, you will want your shoes, socks and accessories to match. This turns your suit into an ensemble.
Do choose a tie that works with your hair color, eye color and skin tone. Your tie should highlight your physical attributes, not clash with them.
Don’t go too short. Your tie should just hit your belt buckle, no longer and no shorter. If you’re 6’4 or taller, invest in an extra long tie, which will accentuate your height instead of having a glaringly disproportionate tie.
Do wear a tie appropriate for the occasion. Never wear a novelty tie to an interview or a formal occasion. Keep it classy by sticking with a print or solid tie. Novelty ties are fun, but should be worn in a more casual environment.
Don’t EVER wear a clip-on tie. To show your sophistication and professionalism, take the time and learn how to knot your tie and display that polished look that will create the right first impression.
